PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth Democratic Town Committee is pleased to name Lynn Rugh as its candidate for the special election to fill a Town Council vacancy.

“I am committed to transparent governance, fiscal responsibility, and to promoting our town as a great place to build a family and a business,” Rugh told the DTC after accepting the nomination. “I am humbled to be the Democratic candidate and would be honored to serve our community on the Plymouth Town Council.”

A resident of Connecticut most of her life, Rugh is a graduate of Simsbury High School and Central Connecticut State University. She is active in many community groups and roles, and although she and her husband, John, have lived here for years, they are excited to have decided that Plymouth is truly their forever home. “John and I recently ended our search for the perfect retirement location, deciding that home is best, right here in Plymouth, where we have great neighbors, amenities within walking distance, and many friends.”

In recent years, Rugh saw her interest rekindled in both public service and in political causes near to her heart, and she joined the DTC six years ago. This is her second run for Town Council, after first appearing on the ballot in 2017. “Having settled here for the duration, I want to have a hand in helping Plymouth maintain its small-town charms while meeting the challenges of the 21st century,” Rugh says.

Rugh’s official duties include serving as deputy Registrar of Voters, secretary of the DTC, and as a board member and singer with the Bristol Chorale. In her spare time, she is a voracious reader, enjoying frequent trips to the Terryville Library, where she helped bring together the Issues and Ideas book group. She also is an avid and successful gardener, and enjoys knitting, cooking, and playing music with family and friends – she not only sings, but also plays the dulcimer and mandolin, while John “plays a mean guitar,” she says. The couple has a daughter and 2 grandsons who, happily, live nearby. “I spend as much of my time with them as they can stand,” Rugh says with a laugh.

Rugh’s resume outlines a fascinating career, from owning a special events and catering company called Renta Yenta; running the office of the Special Master in New Haven, ensuring the distribution of the then-largest settlement fund in U.S. history; managing clinical trials for Bristol Myers Squibb; and spending the end of her working life as a medical transcriptionist.

Rugh can be reached via email at [email protected]. “Reach me with your concerns and suggestions,” she says. “I will respond to every message.”

The DTC recommended Rugh earlier this month to fill a vacancy on the Library Board, but will withdraw her recommendation in order for her to focus on her Council bid.

The special election is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR 2020 ELECTION PROCESS

STATEMENT OF SUPPORT FOR ELECTION PROCESS

From the Plymouth Democratic Town Committee to our friends and neighbors of every party:

As we approach Election Day, many in town have expressed concern over the plan for in-person voting at a single location, Terryville High School, and shared doubts about the validity of mail-in voting.

The Plymouth Democratic Town Committee asserts its confidence in and support for our Plymouth Registrars of Voters, Jeannette C. Brodeur and Debra A. Brown; our Town Clerk, Erica Cabiya; and all our neighbors who have offered their time and energy in this troubled hour to work at the polls.

We believe the decision to vote in a single location was based on sound reasoning. The high school has ample indoor space versus other town locations, allowing for safe distancing; the lighting and sidewalks in the parking lot have been improved since 2018, as has the plan for parking availability for voters during the day; and, perhaps most importantly, an overhauled check-in process for voters is smoother, faster, and more flexible.

No matter the outcome of this election, we have complete faith in these elected officials and their determination to honor every vote cast in our community, and to make the process as safe and secure as voting has always been here in Plymouth.

We urge you to drop off your absentee ballot as soon as possible in the secure ballot dropbox in front of Town Hall, or join with our neighbors in person at Terryville High School on Tuesday, Nov. 3, to share the great privilege we have in this country to cast your vote.

Signed, The Plymouth Democratic Town Committee
